Mark Macey (they/them) is an American theatre-maker working in the UK.

I believe in stories: subtle stories that nuance our world, askew stories that tilt our view, confounding stories that keep us thinking long after we’ve left the theatre. I believe these kinds of stories can shift our thinking, advance public discourse, and even spur action.

I work with old plays – especially Shakespeare’s – in fresh ways. I help new plays grow, sometimes my own. I’m most interested in telling stories about rural life, class, and gender.

I love working in thrust, in-the-round, traverse, and site-specific spaces, and I bring a unique flair for experimentation to traditional proscenium theatres.

I have a deep respect for actors, and I see their work as paradoxical, both pragmatic and abstract, methodical and mad. I value actors as whole people and engage them intellectually, physically, and spiritually.

Among my influences are Lyndsey Turner, Miet Warlop, Pina Bausch, Jacques Lecoq, Jon Waters, and the American Vaudeville.
